I have not used Discussions, but I can see it being a great tool for older students.

Glogster - Creating posters with multimedia elements.
Click the cat to visit Glogster. That's right, I couldn't get a logo for Glogster so you're stuck with my sense of humor.
This is a tool I haven't used much. Bear with me here.
One thing to bear in mind is that all multimedia sources should still have a bibliography attached somewhere to avoid legal issues. These are public even if only in the educational community.
Also, it would be wise to have students gather all of their images, videos and whatnot before they start the poster.

Noodletools - Research notes, outlines and papers all in one place.
Click the cat to find Noodletools. Especially for 5th and 6th grade, there is an initiative coming down from above to do away with paper research projects. This includes paper note cards and outlines.
Right now, the elementary does not have a separate account for this tool. We are supposed to use the HS account until otherwise noted. Your kids will need this registration info also.

Fakebook - Great for biographies and literary circles.
You know what to click. You or your students can create a fake Facebook account for characters in stories by adding posts that reflect what that character is like. They can friend other characters from the story and respond to posts. Use your imagination.
